Literacy Skills
In Preschool, learning the skills to become a reader are new, exciting, and challenging! Working with your child at home to become more familiar with these skills we work on at school will help them be successful!
*Alphabet: The children will be introduced to and practice their recognition and writing of letters of the alphabet.
*Sounds: The children will learn and practice matching letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make.
*Concepts of Print: The children will learn to use a book correctly. They will learn and practice handling a book, reading from left to right, front to back, and end of a line to the beginning of the next line. We will identify and practice locating the title, author, spine of the book, front and back cover, and words in the book.
*Story Elements: The children will begin to identify and recognize parts of a story, characters, setting, plot, moral, and climax.
**Becoming A Reader: Preschool students will be learning to use their skills simultaneously to prepare as emerging Kindergartners and readers! At their appropriate level, when ready, they will be introduced to and progress through materials, continuing to be challenged as they grow- no student will be held back!
**Sight Words: Preschool students will be introduced to high frequency sight words and the Dolch word lists, as they are ready. For those children ready, they will begin to read, write, and recognize these words.
**Author Studies: Preschool students will explore information about different authors and enjoy some of their work.
