Writing In The Works
At this stage, writing is something that is difficult, fun, and very new to the children. This is a big step!! Preschoolers are anxious to be able to do more and get excited about the progress they are making. Give them every chance at home to write in any way!
*Holding A Pencil: The hardest part for a young writer is breaking their habits of holding the pencil incorrectly. It creates frustration! The children will practice holding the pencil in the correct way to form proper letters.
*Letter Formation: The children will be introduced to and be practicing the correct way to write each letter of the alphabet. More specific to each child, we will be working on perfecting writing their names!
*Concepts of Print: The students will practice applying concepts of print in their writing, learning to write from left to right, top to bottom, and using spaces between words.. For those who are ready, students will practice using high frequency words in their writing.
**Stages of Writing: Writing skills are difficult for young children and they will make transitions as they become more developed in their literacy skills. Although it may seem like nothing, preschool writers will start with scribbles that they can explain. The scribbles will lead to isolated words and eventually, they will be able to put their words together to form sentences. As these young writers progress, they will work on their spelling of words and formation of sentences.
**Writing Process: The preschool students will be able to work through the writing process as a group with teacher modeling, and then may begin to do so individually. They will learn to brainstorm ideas, draft ideas, begin to share and conference about their work, and make corrections. Not all students will arrive at this point in preschool, but it is a goal!
